One theme that we feel a Lighthouse evokes is that of responsibility, sacrifice and stewardship. Perhaps you can draw the analogy that a person unanchored from the truth is cast about on troubled seas. Truth is light for the mind when it unveils reality and leads to virtue and justice, and sometimes there are eternal verities that we either can’t or refuse to recognize. That casts us further from truth, and like that vessel in a storm, help is needed. Do we have a duty like the lighthouse keepers to guide others during their troubles?
These are great questions. It’s been a while since I visit the question of leadership. Pair that with stewardship, and it definitely gets deeper. I particularly appreciate this reminder. Hope you’re well this week? Cheers, -Thalia
Thank you for taking the time to read my article. That question comes up a lot lately between me and my co-host. We all have emotional blind spots, but there are basic things we used to learn about judging character that are sadly missing today. Each generation has two goals: to pass something worthy on the next; and, to prepare the next generation for the task of “minding the farm” they inherit from us.
Heston- You're right in the observation on blind spots. So much of what we know or are striving for often aren't within view (or perhaps we choose them not to be?). Some good points here.
Thank you for reading the article, I appreciate it. There are many troubling things about how misaligned are institutions are from cultivating coherent thinking and judgement that ultimate keeps society healthy. In the end, it is up to parents to step in, but maybe “stepping in” is the wrong phrase because it needs to be an active role and not a reaction.
And there is also the factor that we don’t practice falls out of our abilities. That includes our thinking for sure.
BTW I go by “Zee”, as in Humanzee. That’s my online moniker, The Mighty Humanzee :)
