There is so much here, I do need to write and entire article; thinking back to my teen populations I treated before tech, behaviors were the same, being a teen is hard; but the increase in numbers, the negligence of the AI companies to recognize the destruction, demoralization and normalization of mental illness is astounding. If there are in app purchases, of course it is a service. Am trying not to take the deep dive into mental health. I hate AI too. We have allowed a false world for them to exist in and not feel or be a part of. We are creating a generation of language and social deficient people. Even at 25, when you would think language is fully developed, these APP’s have thwarted normal development and the skills needed to express, acknowledge, have cognitive insight have never linked. The movie HER. The AI that Joaquin Phoenix became so obsessed with is now a reality. But, like the indoctrination in schools, the fear, oppression, suppression of emotion, without the language to express it…. 1. Because it is just not developed in children or teens and 2. Like a drug, AI has taken over the neurons and without it, they are deficient in full expressive language development. 3. That would mean there is a actual withdrawal from that drug, but how when it is everywhere? Okay my heart is pounding, Semantics be damned, the marketing must be something where the consumer has power; essentially AI is the BIG TECH Drug and we do not really get a choice anymore.
What alarms me is the Tech Bros has provided a service or product long before we knew of its existence. They have in essence already shaped and molded our culture without consent. Of course “products” are now used by choice, but even without drawing upon the learning of AI from GROK or CHAT GPT, we have unknowingly been its programmers, the teachers of a future universe at the mercy of the developers. How long have we been teaching? What are we really being taught? Where is our God given right to free will? We as humans, through curiosity, research , using the brilliance of tech have been constructing our own demise at the same time. Even in the most liberal of authors, Noam Chomsky would not call this informed consent but imposed consent. Why beg for forgiveness if no sin has been committed. To this day, Zuckerberg has made multiple attempts to get in the good graces of the Trump administration, admitted the suppression of news, has been apologetic and within months has emerged with a new mark of the beast upon him; Human nature learns through fear on more levels than by what we like or love. Talk to someone who fears something, they will be able to tell you in vivid detail every aspect of that fear, breathing life into it. Be careful what you fear for that becomes your focus and that becomes who you are; affecting aspects of your life, choices and decisions made unconsciously ; directing paths unknowingly. It is our human nature to do this, its not a choice, rather it is programming. I have not provided evidentiary supports clinically for these statements but I have them. I just woke up,still intrigued but this article and the overall impact on our neurological, social, emotional development and what they have slowly replaced and reshaped our humanness with artificial neurological responses. Our natural evolution of human development being substituted without consent. What do we become? Certainly mental illness is more severe and pervasive than ever, natural skills never learned and never integrated into our psyche leaves the gap to be filled; and it is accessible, legal, promoted and very often lethal. I will close this for now with this consideration. The mental illness component is so serious and growing so rapidly, the common denominator is the early suppression, oppression and pervasive fear from early childhood, affecting the ability to possess fully developed language and rational cognitive functions. Society has already proven the evidence;; there have been more school shooting, mass shootings, violence in general among 18-25 yr olds; it is not the availability of firearms; it is the thwarted undeveloped emotional fear, evolved into anger and expressed in violence. Why? The age of exposure, the lack of expressive language development and the fear along with suppression and oppression .
You amaze me at how much engagement you have on not just Substack, but all the outdoor activities and family obligations to boot! The amount of material that you present for free is thought provoking and well thought out, most of all, it is sincere. I don't often comment on your posts, but I would like to take this opportunity to say Thank You and encourage you to continue delivering such enlightening conversations.
Personally, I think there should either be built-in timers for every user, 2 hours a day is enough for anyone even though I don't stick to that. Yes, it's a problem for adults, too. Or, as a society, we should just agree these things are bad and remove them. The problem is that you have to remove all of them for everyone and that's a pipe dream.
Society won’t do with the timers like you say. However certifying that a system has been trained with appropriate levels data is a step, and direct monitor for a parent with theirs apps via the AI itself is well within technical capability. Character.ai jsut out in a weekly email last week to parents re kids activity and they have had the issue since 2023.
I am so very grateful my kids are in their 20's. I have no idea how I dodged it, but my boys never picked up on social media. They just didn't get into it. Parents really should consider monitoring, but it's really hard when all parents don't join together. I hope they do.
Our kids are the same age - we kept it simple by not allowing computer stuff upstairs and kept it in the den where it was all out in the open. But there is a lot of pressure because as they got to high school there were all the group projects online, etc.
Yes, the peer pressure is ridiculous. It's really put of hand and it starts so young now. It's not just the kids, either. I've noticed an uptick in parents who get so engrossed they forget the kids are even there.
We did a lot of outdoor adventure with our kids, I write about that here as well. My son who is 20 just admitted that he realized that he was complaining a lot then but glad we forced him to do all the stuff. I've the parents who basically ignore their kids, and to tell you the truth now that my 23 yr old has moved out, I really do miss those days. It's bitter sweet happiness - but I can't imagine what I'd be feeling if I missed those times.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on that sounds like it would make a good interview as well.

WOW. You sum that up brilliantly.

Dave thank you so much, that means a lot to me. I really appreciate it.
