Sunday Night Radio: Guard With Jealous Attention

Continuing Our Quest to Learn About the Anti-Federalists

Sunday Nights Radio returns with more on Jefferson, Patrick Henry and the fate slavery bound up with a Constitution that the Anti-Federalists claimed would end the liberties of the states and create consolidated power at odds with the Declaration of Independence.

Were Jefferson, Henry, Richard Henry lee right?

We also jump into the perplexing commentary I found at the Monticello website regarding the remarking innovations that Jefferson developed and employed. Racism, though, becomes of the primary reasons why Jefferson went to such extents in his home. That warranted examining from several angles.

As we discovered, slavery and the ratification of the Constitution became intertwined, and surprising arguments were made by all sides regarding the Constitution and these debated demonstrated how thorny an issue the institution of slavery was. We forget that up until the Declaration of Independence, slavery was not thought to be immoral. These were new ideas that recently came into discourse with the publication of the Declaration of Independence. Jefferson and Henry both attempted to limit the spread of slavery, and those efforts also need to be accounted for when condemning hypocrisy of the Founding Fathers.

Finally, we entertained the theory posed by the Tenth Amendment Center regarding the language of the 13th amendment drawing from Jefferson’s work.

Perhaps they possessed these talents first and the Declaration of Independence, Articles of Confederation and Constitution were byproducts of those talents.

Food for thought.
